Windows 12 is a significant update for the Windows operating system. It is expected to be released in 2024, although no official confirmation from Microsoft exists. Some of the possible features of this Windows 11 successor include an improved user interface, better Android app support, artificial intelligence, and increased reliance on the Settings app.
When will Windows 12 be released?
Let’s start by saying that we still can’t confirm that Windows 12 is set to release. It’s not like we think Microsoft will make a Windows 9 move and skip this version to land on W13 – we just haven’t heard anything official from the company.
We think it’s coming. It’s just not clear when. There is one rumor we’ve seen that points to an upgraded operating system. Tom’s Hardware spotted a hint from the German website Deskmodder.de that Microsoft will begin work on It. It’s worth noting that it was in February 2022, less than six months after Windows 11 was first made available to the public!
We’re not sure if that source is reliable, but whether this version is actively being developed or not, Windows 12 won’t be coming for a while, given that we’re still close to the launch of Windows 11.
Looking at several significant versions of IT, there is no fixed timeline that we can use to gauge when it will be released. But we can still speculate.

As with any major OS update, there are sure to be countless minor updates and tweaks under the hood. This should translate into better overall performance, new icons and animations, and additional settings you can tweak.
Five best Windows 11 features you should know
Nothing has been confirmed and won’t be for a while, but here are some more significant ideas that could make their way to It:
New user interface
Microsoft’s Ignite 2022 keynote may offer a glimpse of the Windows 12 user interface.
You can see that the dock has a floating taskbar at the bottom, a floating search bar at the top, and various other icons in both corners of the screen.
The taskbar is a little different from the existing bar we’ve learned over the years, as it’s just a little further down the screen. However, the search bar has never existed at the top of the screen like this and hasn’t been wholly separated from the taskbar.
Windows Central claims there are plans for other user interface changes, such as a new (hopefully more helpful) lock screen and notification center, all to create a consistent interface across Microsoft’s product line that’s touch-friendly. And it works for touch. Keyboard users, and this is to be expected with any major release.

Artificial intelligence
With Microsoft’s multi-billion dollar investment in OpenAI, it’s very realistic that the company will use some form of artificial intelligence in its operating system.
There’s already a shortcut to Bing AI in the Windows 11 taskbar, but Windows 12 will surely go further, like using AI in your email and improving image editing. It can easily extend to everything you can do in Windows, like video conferencing, searching, and everything in between—no more Control Panel.
We also expect a further change (probably a complete removal) from the control panel in favor of settings. Settings were reintroduced in Windows 8 and were supposed to replace the Control Panel, but the tool is still available.
If Windows 12 removes Control Panel entirely, all Control Panel applets may be moved to Settings. We’ve seen this start before, like Windows Update, which hasn’t been available through Control Panel since Windows 8.
Animated wallpapers
Our phones can use animated wallpapers, but Windows is forever stuck with static images. This is currently possible through third-party apps like Desktop Live Wallpapers, but it would be great to add live wallpapers built directly into Windows.
Android Apk
You can currently get Android apps on Windows 11, but you’re stuck using the Amazon Appstore, so you’re limited to the options available through that store. Windows 12 can improve this by allowing us to install Android apps through their APK file.
Several online stores allow you to download these files. Windows needs to open up the ability to run them directly through download, so we don’t have to open them through third-party apps like BlueStacks.

Return of MSN Messenger
Another Windows 12 feature rumor (first spotted on TechRadar) is that Teams and Skype will be integrated into a new MSN Messenger. If you’re unfamiliar, MSN Messenger was an instant messaging client from Microsoft that was around in the early 2000s but was finally discontinued in 2013.
Windows 12 system requirements
To install Windows 12, your computer must have the minimum system requirements. These requirements may be the same or similar to the minimum system requirements of Windows 11.
We expect something like this, where your computer must have at least the following to be compatible with Windows 12:
- 8 GB of RAM
- 64 GB of storage space
- 64-bit processor
- CPU clock speed 1 GHz
- An Internet connection and a Microsoft account
Windows 11 introduced some specialized requirements not seen in previous versions of Windows. These include TPM 2.0 and UEFI with Secure Boot. We think Windows 12 will work the same way.
Chances are if your computer can run Windows 11, there’s a good chance you can install Windows 12 as well. But we won’t know for sure until we hear from Microsoft.

Windows 12 is not available from Microsoft. It is not available in beta form, and no pre-release versions exist. At least not now.
This means it’s too early to find actual Windows 12 ISO files, so anything you see on the internet that claims to be W12 – even if it’s labeled as a leak from MS or “Windows 12 Beta” or “Windows 12 Dev Build” and so on. – It is a lie
If this OS is released, the official place to get it will be from Microsoft. As with older versions of Windows, this version will most likely be available as a free update for Windows 11 users. You’ll get it with an update via Windows Update, and as with previous versions of Windows, Microsoft will likely host an upgrade tool and official ISOs on its website.
Of course, brand-new devices, like Microsoft’s Surface line of PCs, will come with Windows 12 pre-installed.
