Many Of Us Have Woken Up With A Sore Back After A Bad Night's Sleep. Recently, Harvard Scientists Have Discovered An Interesting Connection Between Pain And Poor Sleep, And Perhaps Even A Way To Eliminate This Connection. millions of people suffer from chronic pain that can prevent them from doing some activities in their daily life. One of the most important is sleep. Pain can easily disrupt a good night's rest. Worse, disrupted sleep can actually make people more sensitive to pain, leading to an unpleasant feedback loop. In a new study , scientists at Harvard and Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) have identified a factor that links pain and insomnia, a first step toward developing a treatment for it. The key to this connection appears to be a neurotransmitter called NADA. Neurotransmitters are chemicals released by neurons to communicate with each other, and NADA targets the cannabinoid 1 receptor in the brain. This receptor appears to be involved in controlling the perception of pain and is also targeted by some strains of marijuana, which could explain the substance's pain-relieving properties. In experiments on mice, researchers concluded that poor sleep decreases the amount of NADA in the brain. This receptor does not necessarily increase the amount of existing pain, but it does seem to increase the perception of it, making the pain worse than the day before. "Pain in humans is a highly subjective experience," said Shi Jianshen, lead author of the study. After bad sleep, even if there is no exaggerated stimulation, we still feel the pain. This means that something internal controls the pain, like a room thermostat controls the temperature. The research team may have found a way to lower this thermostat. When researchers gave sleep-deprived mice more NADA, they found that pain perception was reduced in these animals. This finding suggests that developing drugs that increase NADA levels in humans could help relieve pain and break the vicious cycle between pain and poor sleep. However, this trial is still in its early stages and more trials are needed to see if the same effect exists in humans.
