Twitter’s Future Competitor Is Shown By Instagram

A Senior Meta Executive Showed Off A Preview Of The Company’s Upcoming Competitor On Twitter During An Employee Meeting Today.

The new standalone app is based on Instagram and will be integrated with ActivityPub, a decentralized social media protocol. The app would theoretically allow users of the new app to take their accounts and followers to other apps that support ActivityPub, including Mastodon.

A senior Meta executive told employees that Meta is talking to celebrities like Oprah and the Dalai Lama about being early adopters. We heard from creators and public figures that they are interested in having a platform that is managed wisely.

The upcoming app, which Meta Production Manager Chris Cox called “our answer to Twitter” in today’s session, will use Instagram’s account system to auto-populate user information.

The internal name for this program is “Project 92”, and its public name may be Threads, according to leaked internal documents.

“We’ve heard that content creators and public figures are interested in having a platform that’s managed intelligently, one that they believe they can rely on for distribution,” Cox said.

He directly mentioned Elon Musk’s method on Twitter. He said the company’s goal for the program is “security, ease of use, reliability” and ensuring that content creators have a “stable place to build and grow their audience.”

Cox said the company already has celebrities committed to using the app, including DJ Slime, and is talking with other big names, including Oprah and the Dalai Lama.

He said that “coding” for this program started in January, and Meta may make this program available very soon.
