Selected Images Of The 2021 Photographer Competition With The Subject Of Potatoes

The Founders Of The Second Edition Of The Only International Potato Photography Contest Have Announced The Winning Image Of The “2021 Potato Photographer” Contest And The Rest Of The Winners.

A picture of a potato by Kevin Abash sold for $1 million in 2016. This issue inspired the formation of an international photography contest with the subject of potatoes, the profits of which are donated to the Trussell Charity Foundation. Trussell supports a nationwide network of food banks, providing food and emergency support to people living in poverty in the UK.

After a successful competition in 2020, the International Potato Photography Competition organizers are once again asking potato lovers to take to their local gardens and orchards to use their skills, creativity, and cameras to bring potatoes to the next level of art.

A panel of judges reviewed and judged the submitted images of potatoes. Finally, the title of Potato Photographer of the Year 2021 went to William Rupp, and  Claire Robbins and John Glau won the second and third places, respectively.

As this year’s winner, William Rupp received a Fujifilm X-T200 camera, a Think Tank Advantage XT photography essentials bag, and an individual one-year subscription to Photocrowd. Robynez and Glav received a collection of camera accessories, Photocrowd subscriptions, and workshops.

The main winner

  • Name of the work: Fish and Chips
  • Photographer’s name: William Rupp

William Rupp says of the image above:

This challenge came from a friend who, after completing the courses at the conservatory, eventually started selling potatoes.

There is a beautiful and strange element to this work. The combination of vegetables and animals has created a peculiar portrait of the everyday food we consume. The fact that the picture was taken with a Polaroid camera and only a flashlight does a lot of credit to the photographer’s skill. There is a highly surreal element in this image with a dark tone, which has translated the work into our modern language with a creative and humorous combination. The above piece is expertly designed and beautifully put together using analog techniques.

  • Name of the work: Potato necklace
  • Photographer’s name: Claire Robbins

Discover the different changes that can be used to recreate a portrait.

This portrait is beautiful in its way, and the photographer humorously added a potato necklace to the photo. Some old legends say that people in the past used potato necklaces to treat fevers and colds. What is puzzling about the above portrait is whether the photographer intended to play with this myth or is it just a fun coincidence.

Photography with the subject of potatoes in 2021

  • Name of the work: Screaming Potato
  • Photographer’s name: Erin Marie

This image was created using potato skins dipped in acrylic paint and a carved potato for the face.

The opinion of one of the judges of the competition about the above image was that this image has been able to evoke well the background of Edvard Munch’s The Scream painting with the brush strokes, and the potato face has also shown the desired quality, and shape well. This reviewer would like  Erin Marie (artist of the above work) to display more images like this in a collection.

Amy Dagron, one of the other judges of this competition, says:

An excellent and very creative combination of photography, sculpture, and painting. Much time, effort, and skill have been spent on this work, which has paid off.

tenth place

Photography with the subject of potatoes in 2021

  • Name of the work: Underwater
  • Name of the photographer:  Kasho

The experience of photographing a potato underwater reminds me of a fetus attached to the umbilical cord.

One of the judges says about the photo of the drawer :

I love the connection between potatoes and umbilical cords; The similarity of potatoes while new potatoes grow from it is like how a new life is formed in a human being! In the book “Feeding the People; The Politics of the Potato’,  Rebecca Earl claims that potatoes and people alike are born from and ultimately return to the dark earth. I think how much we are like nature, and the food we eat is beautifully illustrated in this image.
