Thoughtful Images Of Children Waiting For The School Bus Around Sandy Hook
Photographer Greg Miller, Creator Of The Morning Bus Project, Went To Texas Around The Time Of The Sandy Hook Shooting And Photographed Students Waiting For The School Bus.
On December 14, 2012, photographer Greg Miller learned of the Sandy Hook shooting while his six-year-old daughter was at a segregated school in Connecticut. The following Monday, Miller and her husband said goodbye to their daughter, still trying to process what had happened at Sandy Hook Elementary School.
Since The New Yorker magazine commissioned him to visit Sandy Hook with his camera, Miller has been looking for the right photo to cover school shootings.
Around the same time Miller was anxious about getting her daughter back to school, she noticed other children waiting for the school bus at the end of their driveway.
He started the “Morning Bus” project by photographing his daughter and his friend’s son. Then he asked the rest of his friends to take pictures of their children. It has been ten years since the shooting at Sandy Hook, and he has photographed about 50 children and teenagers.
We need to think more about the vulnerability of childhood.
This collection of photos may seem very calm, But I hope there is a lot of power in it.
The project gained momentum a decade after The New Yorker contacted Miller in May to travel to Texas, where 18-year-old Salvador Ramos had committed a shocking crime.
Miller hopes her morning bus project will instill a sense of humanity and worth in children. Believing this to be self-evident, Miller asks if we need a photography project to tell us that childhood is precious.
