The Natural History Museum has announced the 2021 winners of its 57th annual Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition. The awards started as a magazine competition in 1965 and have been held yearly since then. This photography contest and its exhibition aim to inspire a love for the natural world and draw people’s attention to the planet earth.

Last year’s event saw 49,000 entries, with the grand prize awarded to Sergey Gorshkov for his depiction of a Siberian tiger hugging an ancient fir tree.

The competition is judged in several different categories such as “Animals in their Environment,” “Animal Portraits,” “Behaviour: Amphibians and Reptiles,” “Behavior: Birds,” and other topics.

Winners of all categories compete for the grand title of the competition.

Laurent Ballesta, a French underwater photographer and biologist, was announced as the winner of the Natural History Museum during a virtual awards ceremony from among 50,000 photos submitted by photographers from 95 different countries.

His enigmatic painting, titled “Creation,” depicts camouflaged tropical fish emerging from a milky cloud of eggs and sperm in Fakarava, French Polynesia. Every year Ballesta and his team returned to this lagoon and dived day and night so as not to miss the annual spawning in July during the full moon.
