Dogs at work – first place

The Loyal Co-Workers by Doreen Scharpel from Canada

Kennel Club Dog Photographer of the Year

Dogs: Sam on the left and Lady on the right (gypsy breed, ages 5 and 8)

One day in February this year, I was walking down this narrow country lane in The Lake District when a lady barked happily at me. Since I’ve had dogs my whole life and have developed incredible bonds with these creatures, I always welcome any dog who wants to say hello. Their owner, whom you can see in the picture, also greeted me and after a brief and friendly conversation, I continued on my way.

After about ten minutes I noticed the sound of a vehicle behind me, turned around and saw that there was a very interesting scene to capture. To me this image captures all the expectations of a country dog’s life on a working farm. The enthusiasm, innocence and happiness of dogs to be present in any place where they are needed, make them the best human partners.

I am not a professional photographer but a baker. This photo was taken just to cheer up my friends while I was in search of beauty in the English countryside. I entered this photo in the contest not to win, but just to share it with others; Because I’m sure this scene can fill the hearts of many people with good feelings.

Rescued Dogs – First Place

Finntastic by Ann Geyer from Austria

Dog: Finn (rescued mixed breed dog)

I am a dog photographer from Austria. I have studied geography; But I always knew that my true passion was photography. I have been working as a dog photographer since 2014. The reason I started taking pictures is because of my first dog Cindy, she was rescued from a shelter in Austria. First, I just wanted to take a picture of him to create moments for eternity; But then a real passion arose in me. Now I have two rescued dogs, their names are Finn and Yuri. Both are from Romania. Besides photography, I love traveling and walking with my dogs. I think my job in life is to bring alive moments of dogs’ lives for their owners, to try to show what beautiful creatures these animals are and to prove to some people how wonderful rescued dogs are. For all of these reasons, I always do my best to capture the essence of dogs’ souls in my photos.

This photo shows my dog Finn. I took this photo last year while on vacation in the Dolomites. We rescued Finn from Romania in 2014. Since then he has filled our lives with love. I have never seen another dog as patient and calm as Finn. He is a lovely dog and I hope that all people can feel the special power of this creature through the photos I have captured of him.

I am now going to nominate the dog rescue organization Streunerhoffnung in Austria for a donation of £500. This group helped us get the dog, now named Taavi, out of a shelter called Butosani. I am still very grateful to them.

Man’s best friend – third place

Meeting Of The Minds by Michelle McCoy from Canada

Dog: Kat (Mobland Dachshund puppy )

My wife and I live on our farm west of Prince George BC, Canada. There I have the opportunity to do what I like, I love photography. My photography primarily consists of night images (aurora borealis, stars and the moon) although animal photography is another favorite subject of mine.

I have had a dog all my life and I love this animal. Last year we welcomed our newest member, a dachshund puppy named KAT.

This photo was taken on a snowy winter morning. My husband had returned from his morning chores in the farm to have his cup of tea as usual. At that moment Kat jumped at his feet, their eyes locked and neither of them moved. I went and got my camera and the “meeting of the minds” went on for a few seconds until my wife started talking, then she drowned in Kat’s kisses.

Recording a moment and telling a story from the camera’s point of view is very enjoyable for me, thank you very much for choosing this work; Because the mentioned photo is very dear to me.

Portrait – third place

Synchronicity by Sheena Staples from Canada

Dog: Synchro (mixed breed of Kelly and Staffordshire terrier)

This image was taken as part of a fall themed portrait session of Synchro and her two sisters. When I saw a pile of beautiful leaves along a park path that perfectly matched Synchro’s warm, orange eyes, I knew her portrait would be an incredibly beautiful shot. Synchro is an agile and very talented dog whose excellent obedience made it easy for me to capture this photo.

I’m a seasoned dog photographer but gravitate towards animal portrait work and aim to provide clients with a variety of images that they can hang on their wall forever. I’m lucky to live in Canada’s beautiful and natural Fraser Valley, where we can go from sea to sky in a quick car ride and the backdrop is lush and stunning everywhere we go.

After decades of working in animal rescues and shelters, I now have a family of 9 dogs; So my photography models are never duplicated in different locations. They are probably the only dogs ever featured in this many photos. Of course, I should also mention that I’m always excited to take pictures of other people’s animals. Finally, I must say that I feel blessed every day to be able to call dog photography my profession.

Puppies – second place

Father and Son (Father and Son) by Carlos Eliperti from Brazil

Dogs: Toddy and Ted (gypsy breed)

I am very fond of my 5 faithful friends; But this photo has a very special meaning; Because it shows a pure moment of connection between father (Tody) and son (Ted). This makes me feel a great sense of loss. On October 22, 2018, Toddy passed away. He was the victim of a great cruelty, poisoning. I still have a hard time accepting his loss. I consider this award a fitting tribute to my beloved companion of all hours.

I am a graphic designer and photography plays an important role in my work. Besides my dogs, my taste in photography is very eclectic as I shoot landscapes, architecture, industries, products, street and fine art.

Rescued Dogs – 2nd place

Curiosity by Tianeng Zhang from China

Dogs: name not announced (Barzoi breed)

I graduated from Nottingham Trent University and studied dog photography. After graduating, I returned to China and worked as a full-time pet photographer and fostered three dogs, one of which was a rescue dog. I truly enjoy being with my dogs and thank them every day for coming into my life.

When I photographed them, it was clear that they had just been released. My friend temporarily took them in and tried to find them a new home. When I first saw these dogs, they stared at me curiously. Then I waved my camera around, playing with them and taking pictures. In front of people, they are like innocent children, so it is difficult to imagine their predatory nature. I miss the time I spent with them and I will never forget their lovely faces. Now these lucky dogs all have their new homes and are living with people who really love them.

Portrait – first place

Honey Saluki by Anastasia Vetkovskaya from Russia

Sig: Joseline (breed Saluki, owner: Armina Lasia)

I love working with hounds! They are beautiful dogs, but they are not always easy to approach. Toys and prizes, which are the two main and usual options for any animal photographer, are almost useless for these dogs. Every time I have to look for a special method to work with a dog of these breeds.

The picture you are viewing was taken on a perfect morning in August by an experienced Saluki model named Jocelyn. That day, when we reached our desired location, we realized that the products of that place had already been harvested, so we decided to move. We had to look for another place very quickly. Fortunately, we found another farm. I really like the special feeling of this photo.

Senior dogs – 2nd place

Young At Heart by Kat Rees from England

Dog: Billy (Labrador retriever breed)

This gray-faced girl had no idea of her old age. Right at the end of the photo shoot at Beacon Fell, Billy hopped onto a log and looked at me with a smile, hoping I’d give him something to eat! Although as each gray hair appears on his soft face, he slows down; But Billy is as ready for adventure as ever.

I captured this portrait in wide angle format to show as much of her childlike enthusiasm as possible. When he was politely looking at the camera lens, I approached him and this image was recorded.

“I love dogs because…” – 1st place

Doggy Bed Time by Maria Mobley from USA

Dog: Kobe, known as Einstein’s puppy (mixed breed of Miniature Pinscher and Lhasa Apso)

My name is Maria Mobley and I am 12 years old. I live on the beautiful Oregon coast, in a small town called Waldport, with my family and our three dogs, Kobe, Hunter, and Roxy. I have always loved animals, especially dogs; Because they are very sweet, cuddly and always happy to see you. I started taking pictures when I was a very little girl and I have loved it ever since.

Kobe is so much fun to photograph because he’s my mom’s dog, so he can do a lot and he likes to pose for the camera. He is also a lot of fun to play. He is a very lovely creature that I love.

I took this photo of Kobe in the living room. I used a black fabric background. My mom helped Kobe pose for my camera and also held the reflector. I took a lot of pictures in this situation where he wrapped his favorite toy in his blanket; But this one caught my attention more than the others.

Assistance dogs category, first place

Soul Comforter by Angelica Ellent from Germany

Dog: Lily (mixed breed and rescued)

I photograph the animal welfare association Die Seelentröster – Tiere helfen Menschen e. V (soul comforter – animals helping humans) I voluntarily support them; This tireless group spares no effort to help animals. An essential part of their duties is to use animals to help humans. Their four-legged guardians play an important role in the recovery process of young and old people with mental, emotional or physical disabilities; This method sometimes causes real miracles and has extraordinary results.

The image you see was recorded in a nursing home while working as a team with some assistance dogs that are fully trained to help humans. Whenever I looked at this old woman with depression and dementia she was completely emotionless and seemed trapped in her own world. At the end of this meeting, Lily was placed in this woman’s lap and suddenly she came out of her world; He started petting the small dog and lowered his head a little towards this animal. Because of this, Lily raised her head and pressed it to the woman’s cheek for a while. A very heartwarming and intimate moment that I managed to capture in my photo.

Lily managed to connect with this old lady, a woman who previously had always been disinterested in social interaction and in the world of her own mind. This picture once again shows the very special connection between dogs and humans.

Portrait – second place

Mirror by Ria Putzker from Austria

Dog: Pumpkin (catahula leopard dog breed)

My name is Ria Putzker, I am 21 years old and I live in Vienna. Photography has been a part of me for several years and nowadays you can hardly see me without a camera in my hand! I love taking pictures of animals, especially dogs; Because they always show their true feelings. I love capturing their joyful nature and creating memories that will last forever!

This photo was taken after a rainy summer weekend; When there were many water puddles on the ground due to continuous rain. I took the opportunity to photograph my friend’s beautiful dog in one of them. He had to stand still for about half a minute until the water calmed down enough to see the reflection clearly. It was a truly magical moment and it is still one of my favorite photos!

Dogs at play – first place

Dirty Dog (Dirty Dog) by Monica van der Maden from the Netherlands

Dog: Waylon (Australian Shepherd breed)

This particular image is one of the works in my new collection titled “Dirty Dogs”. I wanted to capture something different instead of nice and clean portraits of dogs.

I was looking for a dog that liked to play in the mud and yes, as you can see from the picture, Waylon loved it. What I wanted to achieve is to make people smile when they see this image. I can also tell you that Waylon wasn’t the only creature looking dirty that day; Her owner, Petra, and I were also very dirty that day!

“I love dogs because…” – 2nd place

Peace And Quiet by Luka Gombos from Hungary

Dog: Leah (gypsy breed)

I am Luka Gombos, a 17-year-old girl from Hungary. I have two dogs and I love spending time with them; Long nature walks, running, frisbee throwing, trick-or-treating, and more are all fun. We have spent countless unforgettable moments together and about 3 years ago I realized the importance of recording these moments. I’ve shot my dogs many times since then and they are still the main reason I bought this camera.

This particular photo was taken on our first vacation as a whole family. My parents and I and my two dogs spent a few days away from home together. One day, while we were taking a nap, I noticed that both of my dogs had put their heads on the sheets. There was something special about this moment, maybe because I didn’t have the experience of seeing them behave like this. Because of this, I immediately knew that I would not miss this moment and immortalize it.

Senior Dogs – Top Photographer, Finalist and First Place

Dreaming Merlin (Dreaming Merlin) by Denis Sichoki from Switzerland

Dog: Merlin (rescued pudengo breed, 14 years old)

I was lucky to find this beautiful and large tree near my home in Switzerland. Even luckier I got a chance to photograph the wonderful dogs next to the beautiful magnolia plant. Merlin was one of the dogs that became my photo model in this place. He is a 14-year-old Pudenko who was rescued from a shelter and is happy to have started life in a loving home in Switzerland two years ago. Since Marilyn is deaf, photographing her was not an easy task and had its own challenges. Because of his special circumstances, I could not get his attention by voice. Of course, this was not necessary because he presented me with beautiful moments with his behavior and movements, one of which you can see in this picture. This is Merlin, beautiful, imaginative and wise. An extraordinary old dog with so much charm that you can see in the picture.

Assistance Dogs – Honorable Mention

Friends For Life by Luciana Veras from Brazil

Dog: Gaia, Golden Retriever

In this picture, I tried to record all the interaction, empathy and friendship between Raul and Gaia. Assistance dogs are divided into different categories; But all of them are equally special and important in the lives of those who really need a lot of help, companionship and love. Gaia is part of an important project and is fully trained to assist people in wheelchairs. I had the chance to follow him throughout his training and capture some incredible moments.

Gaia has always shown many contributions and made sacrifices during her training. Also, this intelligent animal enjoyed training a lot, as if he knew how important his life’s mission was, and this was a happy thing for him. Service dogs are able to transform people’s lives through their unconditional love.

Dogs at play – 2nd place

Let’s play rope together! (!Let’s Jump Rope Together) by Zoltan Kexeks from England

Dog: Rebel (Jack Russell Cross breed)

I’m a Hungarian photographer living in the beautiful town of Eastbourne in East Sussex. I have been a photographer for about 7 years and I work in the field of portrait, wedding and travel photography. Dog photography started for me about 5 years ago when a girl named Agnes contacted me to photograph her 4 month old puppy named Alfie. This photoshoot was very influential in my personal and professional life. Agnes is now my fiancé and Alfie is my best friend. I have also been photographing dogs professionally ever since.

Now I will give some explanation about the image. The girl you see in the picture is Kathleen and her dog is named Rebel. He is actually a trainer who trains dogs. We live in the same city but we met through social networks. After seeing videos of him doing these awesome tricks with his dogs, I knew I had to photograph them. Of all the things he teaches dogs, roping was the most interesting to me. I think the most challenging part of capturing this image was finding the right focal length and angle to capture this scene in a way that would capture its charm as it is. I love photographing in front of the sun. It is true that in this mode a little of the details of the scene are not recorded, but I really like the atmosphere of such images.

Dogs at play – 3rd place

The Joy Of Living by Angela Belwaska from Germany

Dog: Bobby (Ridgeback breed)

This photo was taken last year at one of my favorite photo shoots. What you don’t see in the photo is that Bobby is missing his other eye. He is still one of the sweetest and happiest dogs I have ever photographed. Instead of posing, she preferred to play with leaves or sit on my lap.

Rescued Dogs – 3rd place

A Look That Embraces by Luciana Veras from Brazil

Dog: Mike (unspecified breed, rescued)

I am a photographer from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. I loved dogs since I was a child; But finally, in 2017, I decided to combine my interest in photography and passion for dogs and work professionally in the field of pet photography. My goal in photography is to capture through my lens the feelings of love, friendship and gratitude between dogs and their owners. My love for dogs is evident in the photos I take of them and I am always looking for an exciting story to tell through photography. Fortunately, most of the time I find new stories.

That’s how I met Mike, a rescued dog who was taken in by someone. This animal had physical and emotional scars due to the abuses it suffered in the past; But due to this bitter past, Mike chose to trust and was taken care of by Milena. The events that happened to Mike in the past made him scared and suspicious of everything; But this lovely animal never lost its existence and was always waiting for an honest hug; He found comfort in Milena’s arms.

Today, Mike lives a very happy life with a family full of love and respect. Mike still won’t let anyone get close to him; But he allowed me to do it and take his picture. With my photos, I tell the story of his overcoming his fear and his love for Melina. Rescued dogs have the power to love unconditionally and transform our lives.

Senior Dogs, – Honorary Winner

Until the end of time (Till The End Of Time) by Monica van der Maden from the Netherlands

Dog: Miracle (Hungarian Vizsla breed)

A few months ago, I had an idea in my head and to make it happen, I published a call for adult dog models on my Facebook page. This idea met with many reactions from users and I received many photos of many dogs; So it was very difficult for me to choose a dog for this project, but when I saw Miracle, I knew he was the one I was looking for! When I saw him, I was very excited because I love adult dogs. They have wisdom and life experience and you can see it in their beautiful faces.

We went to a parking garage to record this picture. There was a nice big window that I wanted to use to capture an artistic photo. Miracle really understood what I wanted to do; He understood that I was going to tell a story using an image.

Senior dogs – 3rd place

Contented by Suzanne Lang from England

Dog: Ozzy (hound breed, rescued, 14 years old)

Ozzy was my greyhound sleeping with his head on the coffee table in this picture. This was something he rarely did; So I had little time to take pictures. This usually happened when he got off the couch, then decided to lie down again. At the moment of taking this picture, the light coming from the window was just right and helped me to take the picture. This is one of my favorite pictures of him and I’m glad I have it because 6 months later I lost him to cancer.

Puppies – 3rd place

Dark Dawn With Noah by Lotte Van Alderen from the Netherlands

Dog: Noah (Labrador retriever breed)

It was so much fun photographing little Noah. Every once in a while, his attention would be drawn to something, so he would start running. One of the mornings in December was dark and rainy; There were still raindrops on the plants around us. When we took the photo, Noah was completely soaked from running through the plants. Between those crazy moments, he calmed down and rested for a few seconds; Exactly at that moment I took this photo. He sat down and looked at his owner. From his funny facial expressions, you can understand that he is very happy to travel the world and discover new things.

Dogs at work – 2nd place

Among Hills and Heather by Cathy Behan from England

Dog: Bell (English Springer Spaniel breed)

Ever alert, Belle used the hours we were here to explore the Buttermere Lake District and I was capturing various images of her in this beautiful moorland. This image was captured when he paused for a few moments. It was very charming and enjoyable to watch Belle play in nature.

Dogs at Play – Honorary Winner

A Snowy Chase by Louise Farrell from England

Dogs: Meg and Jake (tricolor and black and white respectively, gypsy breed, rescued)

I’m a pet photographer who captures all kinds of furry four-legged creatures that make the world meaningful for humans. If humans want to take pictures with their pets, I do that too. I am currently specializing in action photography, so I like to photograph animals, especially dogs, when they are smiling doing what they love. Once or twice a month I volunteer to photograph the dogs at the Berkshire Animal Rescue Center (DBARC) and try to speed up the fostering and rehoming process.

One thing always surprises me. It is not known what problems these rescued dogs have gone through; But they seem happy most of the time. I feel that it is my duty to capture their joy in exploring an open field. It’s also a way for me to say thank you to rescued dogs.

The two gypsies in this picture are members of my family. The pair came to me when they were puppies. Meg (9 years old, tricolor) came from DBARC and Jake (2 years old, spotted) picked me up when I went to a rescue called The Border Collie Spot in Berkshire. They play off each other beautifully. This picture captures their excitement from playing earlier this year and kicking around in the snow. I like to see them enjoy life to the fullest.

Puppies – First place

The Little Twins by Monica van der Maden, Netherlands

Dogs: Macy and Vino (Weimaraner breed)

A dog breeder and I did this shoot in a mall and it was a lot of fun. It’s difficult to photograph two puppies together, let alone photograph a large number of these cute animals in a shopping mall. Everyone loved petting the puppies because they were so sweet and cute. When Jose (the breeder) put the two cubs together, they began to wash each other by licking.

Assistance dogs – third place

You’re Safe With Me (…You’re Safe With Me) by Melissa Bastin, England

Dog: Quintus (Labradoodle breed)

I first met Rosie and her companion dog Quintus at Blenheim Palace last summer. My eye was drawn to a number of dogs cooling off by playing in the river, especially Quintus who was clearly enjoying his time off. Rosie and I kept in touch after that day and met a few times to see how Quintus helps his owner in his daily life. The tasks that this assistance dog is able to do include putting clothes in the washing machine, opening the door, fetching things from the refrigerator and so on. We went to St Giles in Oxford to capture this image, where Quintus showed how he helps Rosie deal with various obstacles in a public place. I wanted to capture the amazing bond he and Rosie have and his commitment to help. This feeling can be seen from his look in the mentioned photo. Quintus is representative of many dogs that serve in an assistance role. They are committed, selfless and a great companion.

I am an Oxfordshire based photographer specializing in capturing the unique bond that animals have with humans. Whether it’s in sports, work, or everyday life, my desire is to create a lasting memory of this relationship that will be treasured for years to come.

Young photographer (less than 11 years old) – 1st place

Sea Dog by Sabine Wolpert from America

Dog: Georgie (Havansi breed, 4 years old)

My name is Sabine and I grew up in a rural community in Northern California. Ever since I can remember I wanted a dog and finally at the age of 7 I got the puppy I loved as a birthday present, his name is Georgie. I started photographing when I was nine years old. I enjoy capturing moments, especially when I’m with Georgie. This photo is a great example. I took it on a beach near my house. Georgie was running. He brought me a pile of seaweed and I put it on his head. I expected him to drop his head; But it’s like he didn’t intend to do this and he enjoys having algae on his head; That’s why I took my camera and took this photo.

Man’s best friend – first place

Connected by Kat Rees from England

Dog: Inka (Monstalander breed)

We had just finished a photo session with Annie and her dog on a warm June evening. As the two of them sat in front of the water tank, there was a real moment between them that I could capture. As a result, I removed my camera from the tripod, pressed the shutter button and captured this beautiful and heartwarming moment forever.

Besides hanging out with anime, Inka loved nothing more than playing tennis. The girl picked up the tennis ball and sat her furry friend close to her. Inka patiently sat next to him and turned his attention to the ball. Every time the ball flew into the air, Inca would jump up and chase it, then faithfully return it to her human friend for a pet in return and an anime to say “good girl” to her!

As they sat by the reservoir with a bright light shining behind them, I knew in that moment there was something universal about the unspoken story of a little girl and her dog. That’s why at that moment I decided to make their portrait as a silhouette; A faceless image that represents the bond felt not only by anime and Inca, but by countless dog lovers around the globe. The warm and fuzzy feeling when we reach out and stroke our furry friend is one of the best feelings in the world.

Man’s best friend – second place

White Cheesecake by Alexandra Novitskaya from Russia

Dog: Cheesecake (poodle breed)

Hello, my name is Alexandra. Believe it or not, this is the first time I’ve used a human in my subjects, and before that I only photographed dogs. This photo was taken after a promotional shoot. Cheesecake was completely nervous in the unusual environment of flashing lights and photography equipment; But this cute animal just needed the feeling of peace and security to jump into the arms of his beloved owner.

“I love dogs because…” – 3rd place

Best Buddy by Flora Wilson from England

Dog: Buddy (Nova Scotia Tolling Retriever breed)

I’m a teenager from Wiltshire and take up dog photography as a hobby in my spare time. I love nature and hiking and I try to show this in my photos along with my love for dogs. I first started photography when I was about 11 years old and I took pictures of almost everything around me. After long begging and begging, I finally got my own DSLR camera when I was 13 years old. This, along with the joy of having a new puppy, taught me the basics of proper dog photography. Of course, I must also thank my playful retriever. I started in March last year and although I had to take a little time off from photography this year due to my studies, I think I’ve grown tremendously with the experience.

Dogs are wonderful. Over the last three years I have developed a very close relationship with my puppy and he has taught me many things. I am very happy that I have been able to discover people’s love for their dogs through photography.

This picture is taken of my friend’s cute dog named Buddy. I met the owner through a local group and Buddy is one of my first customers. This photo was a wonderful experience; The location was stunning and the atmosphere was lovely. Seeing the bond between him and his owner was amazing.

Dogs at work – third place

Time For Hunting by Nadezhda Ivanova from Russia

Dogs: Dave and Afina (Vizella).

My name is Nadezhda and I am an animal photographer from Saint Petersburg, Russia. Dave and Afina are my friend’s dogs. Once we went for a walk together and I had my camera with me. The weather was perfect and the dogs were playing and running over the waterholes. Suddenly they smelled the smell of a bird and stopped motionless. First Dave and then Athena noticed this. Fortunately, I managed to prepare my camera and capture this fascinating scene quickly.
