Get To Know Martin Gregos, A Young And Well-Known Canadian Photographer, And Step Into The Rarely Seen And Intimate World Of Polar Bears Through The Lens Of This Artist’s Camera.
Martin Gregos is a young photographer who spent 33 days of his life in the northern regions of Canada to capture fascinating moments of the life of polar bears by combining his expertise in drone photography and videography.
Gregos’ works have been recognized in competitions around the world. In 2008, when he was only 11 years old, he participated in the Natural History Museum’s “Wildlife Photographer of the Year” contest and won a special certificate of appreciation.
His passion for documenting stories and wildlife culminated in a two-part camp (first in 2020 during summer quarantine and later in 2021). During this trip, Gregos spent 33 days in Churchill, Canada, and observed and documented polar bears’ summer life through his camera lens.
Gregos says about the life of polar bears:
Their way of life is extraordinary. As the natural world of these wild animals crumbles right under their feet, they can show compassion and resilience.
Gregos has been piloting drones for over eight years, But it wasn’t until early 2015 that he and his father, who is also a drone pilot, started using drones to film and photograph wildlife. Gregos says piloting drones through nature is a different and more challenging experience than working for Hollywood productions.
This young photographer says:
Unlike human movies, animals don’t have scripts, So we have to predict what they will do shortly. That is why it has been a very long and challenging process to get to where we are today.
I don’t go anywhere without my drone, and I have a habit of flying it at even the most elusive animals. People may not be able to see or be aware that our techniques are the culmination of years of hard work that, when used correctly, provide us with a fantastic tool for wildlife conservation.
Gregos mentions the experience of living and seeing polar bears up close as a beautiful experience and feeling. He says about this unique experience:
On this trip, I used all available tools to get closer to the lives of bears. The first few days can be overwhelming, as it is easy to lose focus and not be able to picture everything as you should because you are not familiar with the situation. However, once I was settled there, I could focus only on capturing specific moments. O
When I got into a routine, I often stopped and sat beside the polar bears while they slept. Sure, I could go camping and sleep or just rest; But I knew there was plenty of time to rest, and I could do that at home. I would rather sit and relax with the bears. Sometimes they would wake up 3 hours after sleeping and treat me to polar bear yoga.
Having said that, if we know how to use drones correctly, these drones allow us to be in more than one place simultaneously and reach a place in seconds instead of minutes. For Gregos, the latter was significant when he captured the image of a polar bear with a rainbow; Because he had no chance to shoot this scene in time without a drone.

Gregos has numerous projects and camps in Canada and internationally. He is currently working on a book documenting the islands of the South Pacific, as well as another project focusing on the rugged beauty of the Antarctic continent.
I don’t think my work will ever end in the Arctic, specifically the Canadian Arctic. I owe it to myself and these communities to share the stories of the northern districts.
