Headphones Not Working on Laptop (8 Methods)

Here are eight solutions used by other users whose headphones did not work on their laptop in Windows 10, 8.1, and 7.

1- Make sure your headphones are connected properly

2 – Make sure the sound is audible.

3- Make sure that your headphones do not have a problem.

4- Update your audio driver

5. Set the headphones to default

6- Change the audio file format

7. Uninstall the IDT audio device

8- Clean the input of the headphones

9- Use Chromebook

Solution 1: Make sure your headphones are connected properly

01 Make sure you insert the correct plug in the correct input. (Both the headphone jack and the headphone jack are coded green, or the headphone symbol is coded ed)

02 Make sure you can hear the sound from your headphones. If not, go for solution two

Solution 2: Make sure the sound is audible

Sometimes you do not hear the sound of your headphones because the volume is low or too low. Make sure the sound is audible.

1) Click on the sound icon in the lower right corner and drag the sound marker at least up to the middle.

Note: If there is a volume button in the software you are playing with, push it higher than the hearing limit.

Check if you can hear the sound from your headphones. If the problem of the headphones not working with the laptop persists, go to the third solution.

Solution 3: Make sure your headphones are not damaged

A broken headphone may also be the reason for not hearing sound from the laptop.

To understand the problem with your headphones: Connect another (but healthy) headphone to your laptop and see if it works.

If it worked without a problem, the problem is with your previous headphones. You need to repair it or buy a good pair of headphones to hear the smooth sound.
If that’s not working, then headphones are not a problem. It would help if you used the fourth solution.

Solution 4: Install the driver

This may also be a problem if you use the wrong audio driver or are out of date. So you need to update your audio driver to see if the problem is fixed or not. If you do not have the time, patience, or skill to update drivers manually, you can do this automatically using driver easily.

Driver easily automatically detects your system and downloads the correct driver for it. You do not need to be aware of your operating system, you do not need to get in trouble for downloading the wrong driver, and you do not need to be afraid of making mistakes during installation. Driver easy is alert.

You can automatically update your drivers with the free version or pro driver easy. But the Pro version does two steps (and you have full support and payment guarantee): driver easy is mindful!

1) Download driver easy (from here or anywhere)

2) Run it and select the scan now button.

3) Click on Update all to download and install the correct version of all drivers that are not installed or are out of date on your system (this requires a pro version – by clicking on update all, the upgrade page to the pro version will be displayed ).

In addition, you can do the updates for free, but well, manual work must be done as well.

4) Reset your computer and see if the problem of headphones not working on your laptop has been fixed or not. Suppose fixed that, well, great! If the problem persists, do Solution 5.

Solution 5: Set the headphones to default

Ideally, Windows automatically detects it by plugging in headphones and setting it to default. But this is not always the case, and sometimes we have to set it as the default for it to work manually.

Here’s how it works:

1) Click on the sound icon in the lower right corner of your computer screen and then select the sounds option

2) In the playback tab, remove and re-insert your headphones to make sure that the headphones (or speaker/headphones as shown below) have both ticked, and then click ok

3) Check to see if the headphone jack on your laptop works. If not, go to Solution Six.

Solution 6: Change the audio file format

Sometimes, you may not hear audio if your play’s audio file format does not match your default settings. To change it:

1) Click on the sound icon in the lower right corner of the screen and select the sounds option.

2) Select the playback option and then right-click on the headphones and select the properties option.

3) Select the advanced option and after the list is shown, select one by one and click the test option to see if you hear a sound or not.

4) If any of these formats work, first apply and click ok. Otherwise, go to the seventh solution.

Solution 7: Uninstall the IDT audio device

Note: This solution only works if you have the IDT audio device installed on your laptop.

1) Press the Windows and R keys on the keyboard.

2) Copy and paste the phrase appwiz.CPL from here and then click OK.

3) Right-click on IDT and select uninstall

4) Check if the headphones work on the laptop or not. If your problem persists, try the eighth solution.

Solution8: Clean the headphone jack

This is self-evident. Your headphone jack may be littered with dirt or debris, which may cause the headphones not to fit properly. If this is a problem, you should clean the jack to solve this problem.

Note: Make sure the laptop is turned off before cleaning.

1) From one ear cleaner, apply enough cotton to fit in the headphone jack.

2) Insert the ear cleaner into the headphone jack and rotate it to remove all dust. Be sure to do this slowly so as not to damage your device.

3) Check if the problem of not playing the sound of your headphones with the laptop has been fixed or not.

But a simple but very effective method (probably definitive)

There is a very powerful and compact software called Windows repair pro that scans your entire system and identifies and fixes all its errors, problems, and defects in about half an hour!

Download and install this software here. (Preferably download the portable version that does not require installation). Open the program as shown and click on All repairs.

It takes about half an hour to an hour for your system to scan, and finally, a Windows restart message pops up saying you should click Yes. After resetting Windows, your computer will work without any problems!

Conclusion

If all else fails, get physical damage to your laptop. It is better to take it to a reliable repairer.
