Are You An Introvert Or An Extrovert? What Is The Role Of These Characteristics In Your Success?

Do You Know If You Are An Introvert Or An Extrovert? Do You Know The Meaning And Signs Of Each Of These Features? Do You Know How To Tell An Introvert From An Extrovert?

Do you know that with a better understanding of personality traits, we can act more consciously in essential decisions and ultimately be more successful in different areas of our lives by using these traits? In this article, you will find the answers to these questions.

Are you an introvert or an extrovert? What is the role of these characteristics in your success?

Being an introvert or extrovert is one of the long-standing debates in human cognition, especially personality cognition. For a long time, people have been divided into two huge categories: first, people who are good at socializing, talking, and social relations, and second, people who are more with themselves and within themselves; People of study and meditation and fewer people of extensive social ties.

Unfortunately, in our culture, introversion is considered a not-so-likable quality, and to some extent, it is equated with shy, reclusive, and mysterious people. But we will see later that these two, based on the findings of today’s psychology, are only two personality tendencies, and none of them is superior to the other. Each has its capabilities and limitations.

It is essential to know which category we belong to and which is our dominant tendency so that we can use it in crucial decisions in life, such as choosing a field of study, choosing a job, choosing a spouse, or having intellectual and specialized tendencies.

Before we get into the main discussion, I prefer to look at three points:

  1.  The importance of the discussion of introversion and extroversion: today, to determine the field of study, especially in graduate studies, find a suitable job, entrepreneurship, and create a position, we need to be more aware of our personality traits and be somewhat familiar with collective behaviors. Let’s ignore that self-knowledge is also helpful in finding a suitable spouse or friends and proper and effective communication with others.
  2.  Definition of personality: Today, most psychologists agree that personality is a set of relatively stable traits and characteristics that a person manifests throughout his life and determines his thinking and behavioral patterns. Depression or personal anger due to a specific incident is not considered his personality trait. Instead, suppose a person shows depression or anger in most situations during a relatively long period. In that case, it can be said that depression or anger is his personality trait. Based on this definition, it can be said that extroversion or introversion is one of the most essential and essential dimensions of personality. A person who is an extrovert will probably remain an extrovert. Still, with a better understanding of his personality traits, he can make the most of its positive aspects and avoid negative traits.
  3.  A spectrum: extroversion and introversion are two ends of the same range. In other words, if you imagine a line where one end is extroversion and the other is introversion, most people fall somewhere between these two ends. You probably won’t find a mentally healthy person who is entirely extroverted or introverted. Be oriented. If the dominant aspect of a person’s personality is introversion, he must also have traits of extroversion.

Extrovert and introvert knowledge

Carl Gustav Jung, the prominent Swiss psychologist, was the first to address scientificallyextroversion and introversion personality traits. Jung believed that how we relate to our inner or outer world shows whether we are introverts or extroverts. He believed that by knowing the intellectual and behavioral foundations of people, their behavior could be predicted. He wrote a classic book, “Personality Types” which received much attention. In this book, he specified all types of personality types and tendencies.

Shortly after Jung presented his personality theory about a hundred years ago, a psychologist named Catherine Briggs and her daughter Isabelle Meir became interested in Jung’s work and tried to create a slightly different but more practical type of personality based on Jung’s theoretical findings. They attempted to identify personality types by creating a Mir-Bergis (MBTI) test. At first, they identified four personality dimensions and then eight preferences, and from the combination of these, they finally reached sixteen personality types. In other words, after taking the MBTI test, all people are placed in one of sixteen personality types according to their score.

How to distinguish extroverts and introverts?

Knowing these two dimensions of personality type is possible in two ways.

  1.  Paying attention to the signs and symptoms of each type and matching them with our characteristics or those of any other person we intend to attract.
  2.  I am taking the MBTI test reveals other aspects of the examinee’s personality in addition to detecting extroversion or introversion.

I leave the review of the MBTI test to another opportunity; You can find both online and paper/pencil tests with a simple web search. Here I will discuss the signs and symptoms of extroverted and introverted people.

Signs of extroverts

Extroverted people receive their energy from the outside and spend it on the outside world, and their main difference from introverts stems from this basic principle. It is the outside world that directs their compass. You must have seen people around you – if you are not one of them – who almost always have to be in contact with family, friends, and colleagues, and loneliness is a form of torture for most of them.

List of traits of extroverts (E)

  • They take their energy from the outside world and spend it on the outside world.
  •  They love to talk and talk faster, and when they talk, they make the most of their hands, face, and body movements to get their point across.
  •  Being with others is energizing for them.
  • Social relationships are inspiring for them. They take the initiative to build relationships with others.
  •  According to others, they are very energetic and lively people.
  •  They try to solve problems by discussing them.
  •  It is easy to recognize them because they talk a lot about themselves and give information.
  •  They like to be the center of attention of others.
  •  They don’t spend a lot of time thinking about doing things and often think about them after they do.
  •  Many people get their business ideas through conversation and interaction with others.
  •  They have no problem using public transportation such as buses or the metro.
  •  The variety of their activities is excellent and broad rather than deep.
  •  Phone, chat, and video chat are favorite tools of people.

Signs of introverts

Introverted people take their energy from within and spend it on the inner world. The inner world preoccupies them, and even the external events must pass through the path of internal experience to be understood by them. This does not mean they only care about themselves and are not interested in others. Instead, they need to be alone and experience the world in solitude. They are interested in others but not to the extent of extroverts. Introverts usually have a small group of friends around them, but their relationships with them are deep and heavy.

List of characteristics of introverts

  •   They take the energy from inside themselves and spend it inside themselves.
  •  They don’t talk much, except in the company of close friends and about things that are very important to them. They speak slowly.
  •  They are satisfied with being alone and deal with thoughts and thoughts in their inner world.
  •  They are uncomfortable being in a crowd and especially do not want to be the center of attention of others.
  •  Usually, they do not have much desire to establish a relationship with others or do not take the initiative.
  •  They are quiet people, so it isn’t easy to recognize them.
  •  Before they act or answer a question, they think about it entirely and must have enough mental reasons to do things.
  •  They are less inclined to use public transportation and prefer a private vehicle.
  •  They don’t express their emotions easily, so they may seem somewhat cold to extroverts.
  •  The variety of their activities is low, but they work intensely on the subjects.
  •  They are usually people of study, meditation, and silence.
  •  Books, magazines, and the Internet are their favorite tools; They prefer email over phone and chat.

Now that you are familiar with introversion and extroversion, you can probably more easily determine this personality dimension. Again, I emphasize that most healthy people have characteristics from both measurements; the critical thing is which category they fall into. In the following, we will briefly mention the role of knowing this personality dimension in success. It is necessary to say that this dimension is only one of the four personality dimensions of this type of typology, and each character has preferences. I mean that just by knowing whether you are an introvert or an extrovert, you will not fully understand your talents and limitations. Still, you will learn about one of the most critical aspects of your personality. In future articles, we will discuss other dimensions of personality.

The Role of Extroversion and Introversion in Success

Behrouz has many characteristics of an extrovert and is extrovert. He is a human resource specialist. Now he is in the position of choosing a job and has two choices ahead of him.

An organization asks him to study the numbers and figures related to employee productivity all day in a quiet room. Finally, using this research, he can make suitable suggestions to increase the efficiency and productivity of employees after implementing the recommendations, measure the results, and report to his manager. In this position, he deals with only one colleague and his manager, and information about employees from different departments is sent to him.

They expect him to be in charge of advertising and media relations in another company. With the team under his management, he must deal with many people and customers and implement effective advertising campaigns. He must participate in many large and small meetings, talk constantly, create business ideas from his words, and influence others so that he can finally advance the company’s advertising goals. He should be able to have a continuous relationship with dozens of reporters in newspapers and websites and, in this way, publish news related to the company in the media.

Given Behrouz’s extremely extroverted tendencies, what career would he choose? I do not doubt that you agree that he will accept the second job. Because this job allows him to make the most of his personality traits to succeed in his career; however, taking the first job will not only cause him to have any progress in his career but also cause him to suffer from occupation and personality burnout day by day because an extroverted person like him cannot be locked in a room and have nothing to do with people, and be limited only to numbers or theories.

On the other hand, the first job can be an ideal position for the butterfly, who often has the characteristics of an introvert. In the first organization, he will have the opportunity to have his own space without anyone referring to him at any moment. He does not have to talk to others all the time, but he can calmly solve personnel and productivity problems of employees and provide practical suggestions to increase productivity. Long meetings tire him, and he prefers to cooperate closely with two or three colleagues.

The subject of introversion and extroversion is also an essential criterion in discussing marriage.

Maybe introverts think that choosing an extrovert spouse will give more vitality to their life; Also, extroverts believe that by selecting an introvert as a spouse, they can take full advantage of his depth of thought and calmness. In other words, they think that each can complement the other. Maybe this will happen in the short term after marriage, and each of them will be very attractive to the other. But since the personality traits of introversion and extroversion are linked to the deepest layers of personality, sooner or later, each of them will return to their characteristics and find the other’s behavior disturbing and annoying, and thus, the war begins.

As I said before, introversion and extroversion are only one dimension of human personality, and to be successful in life, one should also pay attention to other sizes. However, this dimension is one of the essential dimensions; suppose we make a mistake in recognizing our personality dimension or that of another at the very beginning. In that case, it is like the first brick that is placed crookedly in the foundation of our building. By correctly recognizing this dimension of our personality and others, it is evident that we can provide the grounds for our success in different areas of life.
