9 Reasons Why It Is Still Too Early To Buy A Folding Phone!

Have Folding Phones Reached A Level Of Maturity That We Should Consider Buying Them? If You Think That Now Is The Time To Buy This Category Of Phones, Be Sure To Read This Text To The End!

A few years ago, foldable phones seemed like ambitious products only shown occasionally at events like CES and would not be launched on the mass market.

However, today every phone company is trying to release a foldable phone to the market, and users have welcomed this category of phones.

In addition to Samsung, which is the undisputed king of the foldable market with its Galaxy Z series products, other companies such as Xiaomi, Motorola, and Huawei are among the companies that have launched their foldable Android phones.

Nevertheless, the critical question about foldable phones is that if we leave aside the excitement created around these products, can these products be suitable for ordinary users?

Although foldable phones are advanced products, many people still cannot recommend them for everyday use!

Of course, folding phones will soon become unique and high-quality products that will be completely practical for ordinary users. However, problems such as very high prices, not very strong, mid-range technical specifications, not optimal software, and lack of real competition have discouraged many people from buying foldable phones.

Continuing this text, we are trying to check why purchasing foldable phones should be banned. If you plan to buy a Galaxy Z Flip 4 or Galaxy Z Fold 4 soon, staying with us until the end of this text is not a bad idea.

Why is it too early to buy a foldable phone?

The screen of these phones is easily damaged.

Screen damage

Phone companies must use flexible materials such as plastic or fragile glass sheets to make foldable screens.

In both cases, these layers are much more fragile than the usual glass used in non-folding phones!

For this reason, Samsung also installs a layer of plastic on the folding screen of its Galaxy Z family products to give it more resistance.

At the same time, even with this problem, there are many reports regarding the damage to these panels; It has been released, especially from the middle part where they are folded.

Of course, the condition of the current folding phones is much better compared to the first generation of these products; But it is still not possible to describe the screen of these products as resistant.

This is a big challenge for phone manufacturers, so we see many advertising maneuvers in each generation of these products to make them more resistant.

However, no comparison has been made between the screen strength of folding phones and non-folding models to measure the screen quality of these products.

So if you’re going to pay the heavy price of buying foldable phones, maybe it’s not a bad idea to wait for another generation or two to buy a product with a durable screen!

These products are not resistant to dust penetration

Dust penetration

Daily use of mobile phones in different weather conditions makes resistance to moisture and dust one of these devices’ key design points.

However, while recent Samsung and Google foldable phones are somewhat resistant to moisture penetration, they have no resistance against dust penetration!

Mid-range phones such as Galaxy A54 or Pixel 7a have achieved the IP67 standard and have good resistance to dust and moisture. However, none of the two Samsung and Google companies have been able to protect their folding products against the penetration of dust and have only managed to obtain the IPX8 standard.

Of course, if we want to look at the glass half full, the recently introduced Moto Razer 40 Ultra phone has achieved the IP52 standard, which is somewhat resistant to moisture and dust.

Therefore, it can be concluded that folding phones can gradually perform better in the field of resistance against dust and moisture penetration. However, the excellent point seems still a few years away.

You will only be a tester of folding phones!

Despite the popularity of folding phones in recent years, these products are still in the testing phase! Therefore, any problem you encounter will act as a sign for manufacturing companies to make better products in the next generations!

Accordingly, it is better to avoid buying a folding phone until the market of folding products has reached relative stability, and its various aspects have not been evaluated.

In this context, perhaps the only issue that can push Android phone manufacturers to produce high-quality products is Apple’s entry into this market; Because the general approach is based on providing the best user experience for the general public.

Experience has proven that Apple does not enter new markets quickly.

Instead, Cupertinos do this when they are sure that the technology in that field has advanced enough to produce a high quality product that the general public can use.

So if Apple hasn’t entered the foldable phone market yet, it’s because they feel it’s impossible to provide a user-friendly experience for everyone with the current technology.

On the other hand, Android phone makers continue to produce new folding products in two formats, Flip and Fold, and do not intend to make much progress.

Therefore, until there is a severe development in this regard, there is no reason for us to be only testers for the new products of phone makers!

Flip phones usually have poorer battery life.

Google Pixel Fold battery life

You might expect a foldable phone like the Galaxy Z Fold, which has a screen the size of a tablet, to use a large and high-capacity battery!

However, in reality, the battery capacity of foldable phones is usually less than regular phones!

For comparison, we refer to the premium products of Samsung and Google. The Koreans have used a 5000 mAh battery in their Galaxy S23 Ultra, While the battery capacity of Galaxy Z Fold 4 is only 4400 mAh.

On the other hand, the Google Pixel 7 Pro has a 5,000 mAh battery, and the Pixel Fold has a 4,832 mAh battery.

Of course, battery capacity is not the only factor influencing the daily charging of smartphones, and other issues, such as software and hardware optimizations, are also involved.

However, as before, a larger battery would be excellent for users!

We have seen many improvements in this regard, and foldable phones offer better battery life in each generation than the previous generation. However, like many other things, it is still too early to describe the battery life of foldable phones as ideal!

The camera of folding phones is usually weak.

Huawei phone camera

The staggering price of folding phones makes us expect these products to use the most potent hardware components. However, none of the foldable phones released in the market have benefited from a compelling camera, and their image quality is far lower than regular phones.

For example, the flagship Galaxy S23 Ultra uses a 200-megapixel primary camera. In Galaxy Z Fold 4, we see a 50-megapixel wide camera, and the Pixel Fold only has a 48-megapixel primary sensor!

In this situation, the Samsung and Google flip phone camera can be described as “acceptable” at best.

However, considering the exorbitant price of these products, the performance of their camera system is expected to be on par with the market flagships.

Therefore, if you are interested in folding phones and plan to take photos and videos with your phone, it is better to think about buying these phones in the current generation!

Of course, software optimizations and recording high-quality images with average cameras are always logical options for phone makers. However, nothing will replace a powerful camera sensor in phones!

Flip phones usually do not use the most powerful processors on the market

The indulgence of the users of folding phones does not end with the hardware specifications; Because, in addition to the camera and battery, the processor of these products is usually not the most potent example in the market.

Phone manufacturers usually introduce their premium folding products in the middle of the year. This makes the chip used in them a bit old.

For example, Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Z Flip 4 phones, launched last summer, used Snapdragon 8 Plus 1st generation chips. Meanwhile, the Galaxy S23 Ultra, found six months later, uses flagship Snapdragon 8 generation 2 chipsets.

Of course, both chips in question are potent, and their performance in everyday use is not recognizable in any way. However, when you pay $2,000 for a phone, you expect the best hardware components to be present.

At the same time, if you buy a foldable phone, you will get a good camera, an average battery, and a chip from a previous generation!

Flip phones are difficult to repair.

Even though foldable phones are much more popular today than in previous years, and many people are inclined to buy them, their repairability is still a critical issue facing buyers!

The incredible complexity of this category of phones makes it impossible to repair them as quickly as ordinary phones and requires specialized and trained repairers.

In this context, of course, Samsung has launched extensive repair plans in most parts of the world (except our country) and, to some extent, relieved the minds of buyers from this issue. However, if you don’t participate in plans like Care+, you must pay a lot to repair your flip phone!

This issue is also genuine for foldable phones from brands other than Samsung; according to some reports, to replace the Huawei Mate X phone screen, a fee of over a thousand dollars is charged from the users, which is half the price of the phone itself!

Of course, this situation is also improving like other cases. However, we may still have to wait to buy a foldable phone!

Flip phones are not remarkably optimized in terms of software

Android operating system

One of the most important reasons that encourage many people to buy foldable phones is their multitasking capabilities.

Users of these phones should be able to enter the information they received via email without switching from the Gmail app to Excel, enter Excel spreadsheets, or open the Chrome browser and YouTube simultaneously.

Admittedly, though, Android generally performs poorly on large-screen devices, offering choppy performance.

This problem is doubled in folding phones that constantly change between phone and tablet!

Of course, some time ago, Google tried to provide appropriate optimizations to tablet users by presenting Android 12L and continued this even in Android 14. However, the problem of incompatibility and non-optimal user interface of folding phones remains!

Many Android applications cannot run on large screens and crash or hang.

Also, some others are half-assed and do not use the multitasking capabilities of this operating system.

Of course, Samsung has built attractive multitasking capabilities into its foldable phones, and the release of Google’s Pixel Fold phone can also promise a step forward for Android tablets and foldable phones.

However, the effect of these changes will probably appear in one or two generations. Therefore, this year is not the right time to buy a foldable phone.

The price of folding phones is very high.

Expensive phone

Despite all that has been said in this text, the price of a foldable phone seems too high considering its shortcomings and shortcomings.

Currently, premium folding phones generally have a price above two thousand dollars. In return, they provide users with a processor belonging to at least a previous generation and a weaker battery and camera compared to non-folding flagship products.

For this reason, if you are not tech-savvy and looking for a robust and high-quality phone worth the price, you should probably avoid folding products.

Of course, many people believe that the high price of these products is reasonable due to the complex technologies used in the design of folding phones and the high cost and time spent on research and development of these products.

However, it should be noted that you, as a customer, are not responsible for paying for the research and development department of Samsung, Google, and other phone makers, and you choose a more economical product.

Of course, like all gadgets and technological products, we will see a decrease in the price of foldable phones in the coming years. However, the foldable phone industry has not reached that stage yet!
