Winners Of The 2022 Underwater Photographer Contest

The Annual Underwater Photographer Competition (UPY) Has Announced The Winners Of This Year’s Various Categories.

All categories include the best photographs from below the ocean surface, lakes, rivers, and pools.

The annual Underwater Photographer Competition consists of 13 categories, including four focusing on photographs taken in British waters. This year’s winners are selected from more than 4,200 works submitted by photographers from 71 countries.

The judges were delighted to see that many of this year’s winning images came from countries where the photographers live.

The UPY competition also honors new photography talents by awarding “Future Underwater Photographer of 2022” to creators who provide a unique perspective on underwater photography.

Annual Underwater Photographer Competition of the Year

Rafael Fernandez Caballero from Spain won the overall competition with his photo titled “Dancing with the Night Giants.” This photo shows five mute sharks (the largest known fish in the world) feeding on planetary plankton.

Caballero says:

We were diving with Godor Montaner, a shark researcher whose eyes suddenly widened in surprise. We were amazed enough to see a roaring shark coming toward our boat, and suddenly they became even more numerous. God counted 11 sharks that night, a once-in-a-lifetime event!
