Giant of Rhodes, Greece

In the picture, you see a magnificent statue of Helios (the Greek sun god) that was once 31.7 meters high and was built on a 15-meter-high marble plinth in the port of Mandraki in Rhodes. The magnificent statue of Helios was a symbol of freedom from a long siege of the port of Mandraki on Rhodes and was made from the melted remains of the war implements of the newly defeated Cypriots. The exciting thing about this statue was that the ships passed between its legs.

The construction of the Giant of Rhodes, which was a symbol of unity, began in 304 BC and lasted for twelve years. It should be noted that the statue was built on a 15-meter-high marble base, which turned it into a colossal giant. The height of the giant of Rhodes is estimated at 33 meters. You will feel the wonder of this statue more when you know that the giant’s legs are entirely open.

Unfortunately, despite its vast dimensions, this statue could withstand the powerful earthquake that happened 56 years later and fell. This statue remained in the same state for almost a thousand years until, after the Arab invasion, it was divided into small pieces by the Muslim Caliph, Muawiya, and sold after being melted down.

This statue was built at the entrance of the port of Rhodes on the Greek island of Rhodes. In ancient Greece, Rhodes was formed by the union of three states: Ialysos, Kamiros, and Lindos. These three lands were united about 408 years before Christ created a unified land called Rhodes. This city became one of the most prosperous states of Greece and its economic hub, which had many financial and economic relations with other countries. This statue symbolized Helios, one of the famous Greek myths, who was known as the god of the sun and guardian of sight and light. The Giant of Rhodes depicts a man with his right hand raised, holding a cup, and his left hand down, and it is doubtful whether he is wearing a cloth or carrying a whip.

Doubts about this statue are because it was only around 56 years old, and in 226 AD, it broke at the knees and collapsed due to an earthquake. It is said in the historical writings that even when the giant of Rhodes broke from his knees and fell, he was still very imposing. Unfortunately, today there are no traces of this colossal giant, and there are even doubts about the exact location of the statue of Rhodes. In other words, they roughly determine where the Giant of Rhodes was built and where its footprints were located. However, this could not prevent the giant of Rhodes from being registered in the list of the seven classic wonders of the world; Because this statue is one of the tallest statues in the ancient world.

Great Pyramid of Giza

Buildings that may not impress anyone. Nowadays, a new tall building appears almost every month. However, it took until the 19th century for modern man to build a structure more elevated than the Great Pyramid of Giza, which held the record for the tallest building in the world for more than four thousand years. This building was considered the tallest artificial structure on Earth for 3,800 years before the construction of Lincoln Cathedral in England.

About 100,000 skilled Egyptian workers settled in a temporary city to build the pyramids. The pyramids of which Giza pyramid was the largest and most magnificent. The Great Pyramid of Giza was constructed from 2.3 million stone blocks weighing 1.5 to 15 tons and is the only ancient wonder that can still be seen and has not been destroyed by the passage of time. This pyramid was built in twenty years, with a height of 146.6 meters on a land of 5.2 hectares and as the tomb of Pharaoh Khufu in 2560 BC.

The Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt is considered the oldest and largest of the three pyramids of Egypt and the oldest example of the seven wonders of the ancient world. Based on some evidence, Egyptologists believe that the Giza pyramid was a tomb for Khufu, a fourth-dynasty pharaoh. For this reason, it is also called Khufu’s pyramid. The Giza area includes three pyramids, among the most famous of the 138 known pyramids. Each of the pyramids has a different name, and Khufu or Cheops is the Great Pyramid of Giza.

Many scientific theories have been proposed about the construction method of the Great Pyramid of Giza, the most important of which is “removing the stone from the quarry, dragging, lifting and placing it in the construction site of the pyramid.” The outer covering of this pyramid, considered the tallest artificial structure, was made of limestone. In ancient times, this cover reflected the sunlight, and this pyramid shone like a pearl in the deserts of Egypt. Today, only a part of it can be seen around the foundations, and the uneven surface of the pyramid’s walls is its underlying material. There are three known rooms in the Great Pyramid. The highest room, known as the “King’s Room,” then the “Queen’s Room,” and the lowest room, carved into the pyramid’s foundation stone, seems to have been left unfinished. In the complex of Giza pyramids, three smaller pyramids were also built, which were for other wives of the pharaoh.

The Hanging Gardens of Babylon

To this day, there are doubts about the authenticity of the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, and it is still not entirely clear whether they existed or were just a figment of an author’s imagination. However, building these gardens has undoubtedly been a big challenge, and despite the 20-meter floors and complex machinery, it is considered an engineering masterpiece. It is said that the Hanging Gardens of Babylon were built near the Euphrates River in present-day Iraq as a gift from the Babylonian king Bakht al-Nasr II (Nebuchadnezzar) to his wife, Amitis. This wife missed the green mountains of her homeland, the Median Empire.

Amitis was a Median prince who, after marrying Nebuchadnezzar and going to Babylon, fell ill because he was not used to the dry climate of Mesopotamia, and Bakht al-Nasr ordered the construction of hanging gardens to restore his health. The hanging gardens of Babylon were an artificial mountain on which gardens were built. The gardens were square and had arched domes made on a checkered floor. These gardens were like a true paradise on Earth, whether they were legends or reality.

It is good to know that in the meantime, some historians have stated that the Hanging Gardens of Babylon were built in the city of Nineveh by order of Sennacherib; perhaps the reason for the formation of such an opinion is that in historical inscriptions, reports, all the works of Bakht al-Nasr are found and almost in none One of them mentions the construction of a vast collection under the name of suspended gardens. The term “hanging” used for these gardens does not mean that ropes or strings connected the parks; Rather, it was probably a mistranslation of a Greek word meaning terrace or balcony. Strabo, one of the Greek historians and geographers, wrote in the 1st century BC: “Terraces were located in tiers on top of each other and had hollow cube-shaped stone pillars covered by plants.” Further research in the Babylon region has led to finding the foundations of these columns.

The Lighthouse of Alexandria

The exciting thing is that scientists used the most advanced facilities and tools available at the end of the 20th century to remove and examine the remains of one of the most advanced technological achievements of the third century BC. In the fall of 1994, a group of archeological divers with complete diving equipment entered the waters of Alexandria, Egypt. These divers were looking for the remains of historical works and objects in the depths of the water. Buoys marked large pieces of stone and remains of statues, and a ranging station on the beach could pinpoint their exact location. The Global Positioning System (GPS) was used to prove these parts’ locations accurately. Then this information was entered into the computer to obtain detailed and detailed information about the sea bed. This structure was nothing but the great lighthouse of Alexandria and one of the seven wonders of the ancient world.

The lighthouse of Alexandria was in the form of a tower in Alexandria, Egypt. This tower was built on the small island of Pharos, and it is from here that the word Pharos (with another pronunciation: lighthouse), which means lighthouse, is used for these types of buildings and minarets that have a lighthouse on top of it. Above the lighthouse of Alexandria, there was a fire to guide the sailors to reach the port of Alexandria at night.

The sea tower of Alexandria, or the lighthouse of Alexandria, was built during the reign of Alexander’s successor, namely “Ptolemy II” (247-304 BC), by an architect named “Sostratus” and showed the way to future lighthouses. Some believe that the Lighthouse of Alexandria was the first lighthouse in the world. This beautiful 100-meter building was the third tallest building in the world after the Great Pyramid of Giza for centuries. The lighthouse of Alexandria had three floors; A square foot below, an octagonal tower in the middle, and a cylindrical base above, which was lit by fire and guided the men of the sea. This lighthouse was gradually destroyed by the earthquakes of the 12th to 15th centuries and was turned into a medieval castle by the Mamluk Sultan. It is said that a giant mirror was also installed on the tower.

What history has mentioned about the height of the tower is unbelievable. The Greeks say that this tower was about 272 meters high. However, the Arabs, who were able to enter Egypt 10 centuries later, declared the height of the ruins of the sea tower of Alexandria to be 16 meters. The lighthouse of Alexandria was lit above its vast building, which was the lighthouse’s location until the 12th century.

Mausoleum of Halicarnassus

The magnificent mausoleum built for Mausolus, king of Caria, was so impressive that the king’s name was used as a word to describe a large tomb. This tomb, with a height of 45 meters, was built in Bodrum (a city in Turkey) around 350 BC. Its building was made of white marble and had features of Egyptian, Greek, and Lycian architecture. Thanks to its vast, spectacular, and beautiful sculptures, this building was included in the list of the Seven Ancient Wonders.

More than 300 years before Christ and during the Achaemenid kingdom, each region had its ruler apart from the primary king. A couple named Artemis and Mazolus ruled the area of present-day Greece and Turkey. The territory ruled by Artemis and Masolus was called Caria. This couple ruled this area for nearly 24 years and built unique monuments and statues in different places. Mazulus died in 353 BC (in some documents, 352). His wife Artemis, who could not bear the death of Mazulus, ordered the best Greek architects and sculptors to gather to build the unique tomb in the world for his wife.

Numerous earthquakes destroyed the tomb of Halicarnassus in the 13th century. This tomb became so famous that today the name of the magnificent tombs worldwide is tied to the name of Masood. This building was rich in unique sculptures and outstanding carvings; because of its beauty and uniqueness, it was known as one of the seven wonders of the ancient world.

Statue of Zeus

Wood has always been used in construction as one of the classic building materials. Unfortunately, the statue of Zeus in Olympia could not withstand time and fire because of this. This magnificent 13-meter work, which showed the god of lightning on the throne, was an attempt to impress the Athenians. The wooden frame and bed of this statue were destroyed in 426 AD, and its precious decorations of gold, ivory and ebony, and precious stones were looted.

The statue of Zeus (the Greek god in Olympia) was one of the giant statues in the world and one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. This statue was made in 450 BC by a famous sculptor named Phidias. One of the most important Greek festivals in ancient times was the Olympic Games, which were held every four years to honor Zeus, the king of the gods. Like today’s Olympic Games, champions and athletes from all over the world and from distant lands, including Asia Minor, Syria, Egypt, and Sicily, traveled to Olympia to hold these competitions. The Olympic Games first started in 776 BC. These games were held near the shrine of Zeus, located on the west coast of Greece, in Peloponnesus. In a way, these games would unite the nations and even hold them better, wars would be stopped, and a ceasefire would be declared.

The competition venue consisted of a stadium and a sacred grove or Altis. This stadium was the venue for competitors, and several temples were in the sacred forest. The shrine of Zeus, located among these temples, was very simple and small in the early years. Until, with the passage of time and the increasing importance of these games, the need to build a more significant, more magnificent temple worthy of the god of kings was felt. The new temple’s construction began in the years 470 to 460 BC. The designer of this building was Libon of Elis, and the masterpiece of this designer, the Temple of Zeus, was completed in 456 BC.

This temple was known as one of the best examples of Doric design due to the way it was designed and the quality of the craftsmanship used, but it did not seem very worthy of the king of the gods and lacked something to be a temple worthy of Zeus. To solve this problem, a statue of Zeus was considered to decorate the temple’s interior; a vast and magnificent statue later became one of the seven wonders of the ancient world.

Temple of Artemis in Ephesus

The Temple of Artemis was a tribute to Artemis (Greek goddess of chastity, hunting, wild animals, forest, and fertility). The Temple of Artemis was built and destroyed three times: first, Herostratus burned it to immortalize his name in history, then it was destroyed again by the Goths, who beat the city. Finally, in 401 AD, the Christians left only its foundations and a column, which can still be seen in Turkey.

This building was built in 550 BC in the Greek Empire (currently in Turkey). The Greeks built this temple in honor of a local goddess associated with Artemis. The building of this temple was mainly of marble and was created by Crassus (King of Lydia) in place of an older building that was destroyed by a flood. The Temple of Artemis was located in Ephesus, about 50 km from Izmir, Turkey. The Temple of Artemis is one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, which is now located near the town of Seljuk and the historical monuments of Ephesus. This temple was once known as one of the most beautiful buildings on Earth.

The remaining foundations of this temple date its construction to the 7th century BC; However, the Temple of Artemis found its way into the Seven Wonders list around 550 BC. This building, also called the Great Marble Temple, was commissioned by Aaron (King of Lydia) to Chrysiphon (Greek architect). The temple was decorated with bronze statues made by the most skilled sculptors—artists such as Phidias, Ploycleitus, Kresilas, and Phradmon.

Merchants, tourists, artisans, and kings visited this holy place and expressed their respect by bringing various gifts. Recent archaeological research has led to the discovery of these gifts, including gold and ivory statues of Artemis, beautiful earrings, bracelets, and necklaces made by artisans worldwide.
