World nature photographer
- Amos Nachum
Amos Nachum of the United States took home the top prize for his image of a leopard seal about to hunt a gentoo penguin. Nachum’s photo also won in the Behavior: Mammals category.
He waited patiently for hours on the remote island of Plano near the Antarctic Peninsula, waiting for the right moment. Nachum explains this photo:
The leopard seal reached the lagoon just before low tide. It put my head in the water like a rock submerged in water. Young gentoo penguins only venture into the water when the water is shallow, so Fook knew what he was doing. When the penguins got close enough to the seal, the seal turned its head with lightning speed, grabbed one of them by the leg, and dragged it into the water.
To his surprise, he released the penguin twice, as if he was enjoying the game. In the continuation of the game, the frightened penguin tried to escape, But soon, the game ended in Fook’s favor.
