Mark captured this image while swimming at Lady Elliot Island in Queensland, Australia. He grabbed the moment Terry raised his fins to swim toward the camera. The result of the photo was so satisfying that it looked like the turtle was showing its middle finger to the camera out of anger.

The 2020 awards ceremony was held live on Instagram and attracted the attention of many viewers from around the world. The 2020 finalist Mark Fitzpatrick said he was thrilled and honored to win Comedy Wildlife Photographer of the Year. He says:

It’s fantastic to see the reactions to Terry the Turtle’s photo. Terry made people laugh during this challenging year and helped spread a vital conservation message. I hope Terry the Tortoise can inspire more people to take a moment to think about how much incredible wildlife we have and what we can do to help. I’m sure this reward will help Teri’s anger subside so that she’ll be more cheerful the next time I see her on Lady Elliot Island.

The Wildlife Comedy Photography Contest was founded by professional and passionate conservation photographers Tom Solam and Paul Johnson-Hicks. They hope to highlight the importance of wildlife conservation attractively and positively and make it seem necessary to everyone.

During the quarantine, people found time to take new pictures of their local wildlife or see photos sitting on their hard drives for years. This issue has made the flow of quarantine a little more manageable for our team. As a small team, we have communicated constantly via video calls to keep the competition on the track.

Tom is adamant that the competition entry gets better yearly than before. The number of entries in 2020 has been more than in all the years of this competition.

You can never tell the final winner during the competition! There is a significant difference in the judges’ opinions and performance in judging the images’ humor. Paul and I technically monitor and review the photos and then ask the judges to score the final images based on the richness of spirit and sense of comedy found in each.
