After conducting a unique photographic study of insects through an acclaimed project called Microsculpture, Bess turned his attention to botany.

Bess says about his project:

I take macro and photomicroscopic photographs with a significant focus on the natural world. These images of seeds were taken at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Edinburgh, and are held in the garden’s carpology collection. Some of these seeds are new, But some date back 150 years or more.

This plant-loving photographer explains the purpose of his work as follows:

Macro photography of seeds allows collections usually hidden from view to be displayed educationally and entertainingly. The purpose of my work is to reveal details of nature that are generally not visible to the human eye. In doing so, photography creates a vital link between botanical gardens or museums and the general public.

Macro bass shots often require a lot of time and effort; they result from combining and matching many photos into single images with very high resolution. Bess adds:

Most images are of thousands of individual photos, especially those I created of insects. These photos are made from about ten thousand personal photographs, and it took 3 to 4 weeks to make each one.
