A Photographer Using The Huawei P10 Plus Captured Images For The Cover Of A Magazine In Chile.

In the following, you can see the words of Ben Phillips, the photographer of these pictures, and enjoy reading these words.

Recently, a client from Chile contacted me and asked me to produce pictures of  Alexis Sanchez to be printed on the cover of Cosas magazine. Sanchez is a football player from Chile who was transferred from Arsenal to Manchester United and is among the celebrities of his country. Cosas magazine is also the biggest and most famous magazine in Chile.

I gladly accepted this request.

But there was one catch: all the pictures had to be taken using a smartphone; Because Sanchez is one of the business ambassadors of Huawei, the Chinese telecommunications giant.

Here I had to confirm that the images I capture are from the Huawei P10 Plus, this phone has a great camera, so I accepted the challenge, knowing that it would not be an easy task. I also did not doubt that this smartphone was capable of capturing images.

Please make sure they look good enough. But the main problem was somewhere else, the planning and execution of this image were done outside the convenient and convenient place for me, and I had to do it with a smartphone camera that I had no familiarity with and something beyond what this smartphone was designed for. I needed

Like any other photo, the most important thing was the correct lighting. Phone 10 Plus was able to record raw images, and this feature itself was a great help for me; But in any case, I knew that I had to be very careful about the lighting; Because I didn’t have a chance to make a mistake and few rooms were reserved for filming.

And there were still other challenges. I had to make the most of the time I had. According to my experience photographing high-level athletes, I only had less than ten minutes to capture these images, and since the magazine wanted at least three different photos from me, it was tough and challenging to capture these images, and it became even more difficult; Because Sanchez was not able to speak English and this itself slowed down the work process. He used an interpreter, which was time-consuming, and my time was limited.

Another problem was the lack of suitable space; the filming was not in a big and bright studio. Instead, filming was to take place in a house in southwest London, where Sanchez was due to appear on a TV show later in the day. All the suitable spaces were occupied, So I only had two bedrooms and one bathroom without windows. Of course, these were not important; Because it was scheduled in the London winter and the afternoon, which meant there was no natural light in the room.

Two days before the shoot, I was given the smartphone to familiarize myself with its settings and performance. I was going to do a lot of testing to choose the best lighting using a Rotolight Anova Pro and a Limelite Pixel 300 W heads.

On the day of the shoot, I went to the shoot several hours early to set up and test and check all the steps. I decided to build three small studios using the rooms I had and had to move the Anova Pro between rooms with me.

The shoot was well done, and despite Sanchez’s language barrier, he was professional and cooperated well with me for the shoot. According to my experience, this is usually not achieved by professional football players. This made me worry about Sanchez too, which was completely unnecessary; Because everything was done very quickly and accurately.

All that was left was to pack up and go home to review the photos.

Despite all the problems, Ben Phillips could finally record the desired images.

The client was pleased with these images and published them on eight magazine pages. I don’t prefer to put away my camera and start shooting with a smartphone, but it was a new and exciting experience in that I learned a lot; it seemed a little scary, But it also had an extraordinary result.
