Nature Art BigPicture Photography Contest 2021

  • Category: Art of Nature
  • Image title: Rain dance
  • Name of the photographer: Sarang Naik
  • Photography Location: India

The Nature Art category showcases the best abstract natural or scientific concepts with endless creative possibilities. Sarang Naik’s winning photo depicts a golden dust of spores rising from the pores of a mushroom cap in India.

Few of these spores sit on the ground and prepare to produce new mushrooms. Still, more of them make their way into the atmosphere to form a solid core from condensing water into clouds and rain, protecting forests worldwide and future generations of fungi. Due to the worsening of droughts following climate change, fewer fungi will sprout, less rain will occur; and as a result, Earth should expect more severe droughts in the future.

The wildlife of terrestrial animals. BigPicture photography contest 2021

  • Category: Wildlife, land animals
  • Image title: Boss

  • Photography Location: Northern British Columbia

The image above by Michelle Wahlberg shows a Kermode bear (a species of American black bear) on a remote island in northern British Columbia. Wahlberg is a Nikon ambassador and the first National Geographic photographer living in Canada. To record this scene, he waited for the moment the bear took its head out of the water and shook it so the water droplets spread around.

This touching photo shows a curious California sea lion facing a mask floating in the water. Peter says about this:

It was the first time I had ever seen a mask underwater, But this sea lion has likely seen a lot more than that.

BigPicture photography contest 2021

  • Category: illustrated story; unusual
  • Collection title: Ice bears
  • Photographer’s name: Peter Meter

Bears face impacts from climate change and other human activities that have led to scattered salmon runs, reduced river flows, and shorter winters.
