Derrick Lane’s photography collection features miniature figures that engage Lane’s conscious thinking and help him express his moods and thoughts through quiet scenes. All these scenes are carefully created on his desk.

Lin first entered the world of miniatures nine years ago and immediately began collecting them. He began photographing them, showing scenes that showed a different and creative perspective on his stressful life as a professional in the advertising world.

This creative artist started this work as a hobby for himself and his colleagues. It didn’t take long for this to become a more extensive collection when his work became the focus of media and brands such as Apple, Disney, The Wall Street Journal, and Instagram. Unlike other toy and miniature photographers, Lin takes photos exclusively with an iPhone.

He says:

In my opinion, the main attraction of smartphone photography is the possibility of using them without prior planning. I can pull out my phone and start shooting whenever I feel inspired.

Smartphone photography allows Lin to shoot at difficult angles that larger or mirrorless DSLRs can’t. The weakness of smartphone photography is that features and capabilities such as macro focus and the number of pixels are more limited compared to cameras. However, this is not an obstacle for Lin; Because she sells her prints to online fans and audiences who are excited to decorate their homes with her photos.

Mood plays a vital role in Lin’s work; Because he is often inspired by the seasons, nature, city life, and mental health. He explains:

I try to visualize and create stories of my moods and thoughts in recent events. I take the quieter, contemplative ideas I usually hesitate to express as subjects and develop miniature scenes to highlight them with tiny figures as the main effect.

Lin’s miniature sets include desk accessories such as stationery, pencils, notepads, books, and mugs. All this helps him create a world of images displayed on the work surface. Lin doesn’t glue his stuff; Therefore, the sets are fragile and require care. Due to the lighting conditions and the camera frame, completing each group requires about a week of trial and error and fine-tuning.
