Researchers say one of the most common cold viruses can flush the Covid 19 virus out of the body’s cells and reduce the prevalence of coronary heart disease.
Some viruses compete for infection in the body. Scientists at the University of Glasgow say the common cold-causing rhinovirus appears to be overpowering the Corona virus . These benefits may be short-lived; But rhinoviruses are so prevalent that they can still help suppress Covid .
Think of your nose, throat, and lung cells as a row of houses. When a virus enters, it can leave the door open for other viruses to enter, or close the door and save the new home.
Influenza is one of the most selfish viruses in this regard and almost always infects the host alone. Some viruses, such as adenoviruses, appear to be more willing to share their home.
There has been much speculation about how the Covid 19 virus , SARS-CoV-2, works in the mysterious world of virus interactions.
The challenge for scientists is that a year of social distance has slowed the spread of all viruses and made it more difficult to study.
According to the BBC , researchers at the Virus Research Center in Glasgow used a similar sample of our airway covering made from the same type of cell and infected it with the SARS-CoV-2 virus and the rhinovirus. Rhinovirus is one of the most common infections among people and causes colds.
If rhinovirus and SARS-CoV-2 were released simultaneously, only rhinovirus would be successful. If the rhinovirus had started 24 hours earlier, SARS-CoV-2 would not have been seen at all. Even when SARS-CoV-2 had 24 hours to start, the rhinovirus kicked it out. Dr Pablo Murcia told the BBC:
SARS-CoV-2 virus never prevails; Rather, it is severely inhibited by rhinovirus. This is very interesting; Because if you have a high prevalence of rhinovirus, it can stop new SARS-CoV-2 infections.
Similar effects have been seen before. A large outbreak of rhinovirus may have delayed the outbreak of swine flu in parts of Europe in 2009.
Further experiments showed that rhinovirus elicited an immune response within infected cells that inhibited the ability of SARS-CoV-2 to multiply. When the scientists inhibited the immune response, the level of the Qovid virus reached a level that was seen in the absence of the rhinovirus.
Winter is hard ahead
Covid can cause an infection again by eliminating the common cold and calming the immune response. “Vaccination, along with health measures as well as interactions between viruses, can greatly reduce the prevalence of SARS-CoV-2,” said Dr. Murcia; “But the maximum effect comes from vaccination.”
“Human rhinoviruses, the most common cause of colds, are highly contagious,” said Professor Lawrence Young of Waric School of Medicine.
He added that the study showed that this common infection could affect the pressure of the colic 19 and affect the spread of SARS-CoV-2; Especially in the autumn and winter months when seasonal colds are more common.
It is unknown at this time what he will do after leaving the post. The corona virus is likely to be still circulating, and all other infections that were suppressed during globalization may return with reduced immunity.
Dr Susan Hopkins of the UK Public Health Service has warned of severe winters. “We may see an increase in the flu and other respiratory viruses and other respiratory pathogens,” he said.
The results of a new study are published in the Journal of Infectious Diseases.
