Heat-Assisted Magnetic Recording (HAMR) is a method of reading and writing on high-density hard disks. In this technology, a laser is connected to the read-write heads, which makes it possible to write data while maintaining magnetic and temperature stability by heating the surface of the plotter very briefly.

According to Seagate, in the third quarter of 2023, the company will start mass production of the second generation of hard disks based on HAMR technology. Seagate emphasizes that the future of mechanical hard drives will be keyed by releasing the second generation of HAMR technology.

Currently, the company will use HAMR drives for cloud-scale data centers and expects to produce entry-level, mid-range, and high-capacity drives to help with manufacturing overhead and costs.

Previously, Seagate had unveiled the IronWolf Pro series hard drives, which target the market of network storage equipment and professional content producers. According to Seagate, the start of sales of this new hard drive coincides with the release of 22 TB Exos X22 hard drives.

According to information provided by Seagate, the company’s new 22 TB hard disk with product ID ST22000NT001 has ten platters and 20 read-and-write heads that use the CMR technique common in conventional hard disks.
