Stealing user information is familiar enough for thieves, so you should know how to protect your iPhone data.
The security weakness of iPhones has always been in their passwords, but the Wall Street Journal has mentioned this problem again. This publication has seen accounts of users who lost their iPhones after entering the password by thieves or people who were forced to share their passwords under pressure.
In some of these reports, the situation has been exacerbated by Apple’s measures. An Apple Recovery Key is a random 28-character code you can set to restore access to your Apple ID later.
Creating a recovery key turns off the account recovery process. This process helps you sign in to your Apple ID account when you don’t have enough information to reset your password. n a support post, Apple says, “Using a recovery key is not required, but using it strengthens the security of your account by giving you control over the password reset process.”
How to protect your iPhone data
Everything you need to protect yourself in this situation should be done before the theft. Always being careful about entering your password when it might be seen is one of the easiest and most common-sense ways to avoid this problem for any user. The best option for use in public places is biometric methods such as Touch ID or Face ID.
A thief could pick up an iPhone and hold it up to the owner’s face to unlock it with Face ID, but that would take time, and the user would probably be instantly aware of the theft.
Users can go to Settings, Face ID & Passcode on their iPhone and enable Attention Detection for Face ID. This means that the user has to look specifically at the iPhone to unlock it.
Sometimes, the user may be forced to unlock with Face ID by threatening or trying to defeat. It is also possible for the user to do this unconsciously.
Screen Time can be set to prevent account changes. Alternatively, you can prevent changes to your account by using a different password, similar to how you prevent changes to settings on a child’s iPhone.
How to set the Apple ID recovery key on your iPhone or Mac in Settings
Settings > Your Name > Password & Security.
- Tap Recovery Key, then activate it. On a Mac, click Manage next to Account Recovery.
- Tap on the Use Recovery Key and enter the device password.
- Please write it down, keep it safe, and then confirm it on the next page.
Apple has stated that using a recovery key provides additional security, but you are responsible for maintaining access to your trusted devices and recovery key. You may be permanently banned from your account if you miss both.
This is not a theoretical problem, but it does not generally occur despite using biometrics.
We keep all our data on our iPhones, and losing it is an opportunity for thieves and a disaster for us, so everyone should pay more attention to protecting their mobile phones.
