The Winners Of This Year’s Mangrove Photography Awards Were Announced, With A Close-Up Portrait Of An American Alligator In Cuba Taking The Overall Winner.
The Mangrove Photography Awards, run by the Mangrove Action Project, are in their eighth year. This year, more than 2000 images from 68 countries were submitted for this competition.
Kerna or mangroves are a group of trees and shrubs that grow in coastal tidal areas. Trees grow in areas with low-oxygen soil, where low-flowing water allows fine sediments to accumulate. Mangrove forests only grow in tropical regions.
This round’s winner, Tanya Hooperman, got up close and personal with a crocodile in the luscious mangroves of the Queen’s Garden in the protected archipelago off the coast of Cuba. A healthy population of American alligators depends on the pristine condition of the mangroves. Tanya wanted to capture fascinating close-ups of this gentle giant in its natural habitat. He hopes the image can show how vital it is to protect areas like this.
