A Poignant Photo Of Life And Death Has Won The Australian Nature Photographer Of The Year Competition

Ashley Johnson won the overall winner of the Australian Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year 2022 for her poignant photograph of life and death titled “Prey of Nature.”

Ashley Johnson captured the overall winner of the 2022 Nature Geographic Australia Photographer of the Year competition, taking home the AU$10,000 prize for capturing a photo of a shark circling the carcass of a young whale. “Nature’s Prey” was shot in Western Australia’s Coral Bay and emphasized the wild nature of its ecosystem.

The Australian Natural Geography Photographer of the Year competition, formerly known as ANZANG, is run by the South Australian Museum and is open to all photographers of all ages, skill levels, and nationalities.

Johnson explains:

For days, the tourist boats watched the body of the young whale move slowly in the bay, getting sicker and slower, and the shark bite marks on its body became more apparent. When my friends informed me, I quickly went to the place where the body of the whale had fallen, and around it, I saw several sharks that were well fed.
